The Truth Is Out: Sunglasses Have A New Place On The Course

It was once unthinkable for a professional golfer to wear sunglasses while hitting a shot or putting. While it’s still uncommon on the PGA Tour, several LPGA and Champions Tour golfers wear sunglasses while swinging their clubs.

When reading greens, sunglasses were once thought to be a barrier to depth perception, feel, and picking up nuances. However, various manufacturers have released technology in the previous decade that eliminates the old arguments. That is, if golfers are prepared to give them a shot.

Aside from the apparent benefit of eye comfort, why should you wear sunglasses on the course? First and foremost, there is the issue of eye health. Long-term exposure to sunlight can injure your eyes, increasing your chances of developing cataracts, macular degeneration, pterygia, and other disorders. According to studies, 30 percent of golfers aged 60 and more have eyesight problems caused by light.

Furthermore, your eyes expend a lot of energy, especially on sunny days when doing a focus-intensive activity like golf. Late in the round, the less strain you can put on your eyes, the better you’ll feel.

If you’re looking for a pair of sunglasses for the course, keep the following characteristics and benefits in mind:

100% UV protection: Your sunglasses should protect you from the entire spectrum of harmful ultraviolet light, including UVA, UVB, and UVC rays. The best also block UV400 rays.

Polarization, or lack thereof: Polarized lenses reduce glare by allowing only vertical light to pass through while blocking horizontal light. Detractors, on the other hand, believe that polarization reduces your capacity to read greens by “flattening” surfaces. Both polarized and non-polarized golf sunglasses are available.

Lens color is an important consideration when it comes to how sunglasses operate in various lighting conditions. Some manufacturers, in fact, provide interchangeable lenses in a wide range of hues. Others have lenses that blend many colors. Here are some basic guidelines to keep in mind:

Gray lenses – A neutral, non-distorting color that won’t impair distance perception but won’t help with green reading because it doesn’t increase contrast.

Red lenses boost contrast while distorting other colors.
Green sunglasses

Brown/green/amber: Enhance depth perception, contrast, and clarity while minimizing glare, but may not be as comfortable on really bright days.

Yellow/orange: Improve depth perception and contrast, but may make it difficult to read green.

Weight and comfort: The majority of frame and lens materials are lightweight, which is a significant benefit. To avoid slippage when your nose and face perspire, look for glasses with adjustable temples.
Scratch resistance is a must-have feature in golf sunglasses.
Many manufacturers can custom-build sunglasses to your exact specifications if you have a new prescription. Rx eyewear, of course, comes at a price.

Expense: Now that golf-specific sunglasses are considered (and sold as) a vital piece of equipment, they can be quite costly. While some non-prescription pairs can cost up to $300, lesser models (about $50) may not provide the same level of protection and performance. It’s always a good idea to try something out before you buy it.
